September 17, 2017 - 3:00pm

Alexander Mickelthwate, conductor
Kerry DuWors, violin

Beethoven: Violin Concerto in D major
Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 4 in F minor

Leave it to Beethoven to be the master contrarian when he felt it was necessary. Beethoven's Violin Concerto, overflows with radiant happiness where inner reflection and virtuosity are sublimely managed in perfect balance to elevate as well as thrill. Much different from the standard practice of 19th-century "virtuoso" concertos of the time! Hear this masterpiece and you are forever changed, as Brandon's own Kerry DuWors will prove.

Tchaikovsky felt his Fourth Symphony was his greatest achievement at the time and an uplift to his turbulent mental state. It's a story about fate's ever-presence, from stark reality through thankfulness, the joys of life and the happiness of others in a story brilliantly told.

February 11, 2018 - 3:00pm

Julian Pellicano, conductor
Katherine Chi, piano

Schumann: Manfred Overture
Beethoven: Piano Concerto No. 3 in C minor
Schumann: Symphony No. 3 in E-flat major (Rhenish)

Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 3 introduced a more personal style as the composer started to push the piano to its expressive limits. He didn't bother completing the piano part for the premiere, simply playing the work from memory.

As the new conductor of the Düsseldorf orchestra, Schumann wanted to impress the proud Rhineland folk. His lovely Rhenish symphony was the result: a journey from imposing brass to bucolic waltzes to magnificent cathedral impressions. The concert opens with Schumann's take on Manfred, the original Byronic hero
